On Friday, November 8, about a hundred members of the fast-growing pickleball playing community showed up to try the eight new outdoor courts built specifically for their game. The courts are located at 11706 W. 82nd Ave., next to the Apex PRD Simms Street Center. After a few opening remarks to commemorate and celebrate the occasion, players eagerly took to the courts. A crowd of about 150 attended the June 3 groundbreaking for the state’s first outdoor courts built specifically for the game of pickleball. Many brought their own shovels to help turn over the first dirt for this exciting project, afterwards enjoying refreshments despite the gusty afternoon wind. Nearly a dozen of the Jeffco Aquatic Masters swimmers, whose home pool is Apex PRD’s George J. Meyers Pool, attended the recent Colorado Masters Swimming Association State Meet in April. They achieved some impressive results. The men’s overall team ranking was 13th, the women’s overall team ranking was 14th , and the combined team ranking was 14th. The popular, growing sport of pickleball will soon have home courts in Arvada, thanks to “Pickleball Ken” Marquardt, hundreds of friends and supporters, and lots of hard work and enthusiasm. Pickleball is played with a paddle and wiffle ball, over a net, and combines the rules of ping pong and badminton.
