Apex Center fondly remembers Yvonne Dowlen, a lifelong skater who inspired many

Yvonne Dowlen, lifelong skating devotee, Apex Ice Arena regular and Apex PRD/North Jeffco instructor, recently passed away at age 90. Many Apex Center staff, participants and ice arena spectators fondly remember her and continue to be inspired by her amazing story.

To honor Yvonne and her incredible commitment to the joy of movement, on Wednesday, September 21 from 6:30 to 8 pm, the Apex Center’s public skate session was dedicated to her memory. The public, family and friends join in this celebration and to underscore Yvonne’s special spirit, the event’s theme was “Superheroes” and everyone dressed in superhero garb received free admission.

“She inspired others of all ages, on and off the ice,” reads a Facebook post about Yvonne. For her, slowing down was not an option. “I’m not too old to move,” she often said. Yvonne pursued her love of skating for nearly 80 years, starting at age 13. Highlights included a stint with the Ice Capades and many national awards including second place at the Senior Skating Championships last year.

Yvonne embraced a full and active skating program until her recent passing. In recent years she was accompanied on the ice by her daughter, Sherry Dowlen, also an accomplished figure skater. Yvonne’s son, Bret Dowlen, also shared the joy of skating with his mother. “Skating was her passion and her focus. My life is full of memories of skating myself and the ice rinks she taught at. Rinks as diverse as the Denver Country Club, which ran in the winter only, as it was outside, to all the other indoor rinks with all of their individual quirks. It was her life.”

I was just thinking about Yvonne. I took adult learn to skate when my kids were taking skating lessons, she was wonderful. I am saddened to hear of her passing but feel fortunate that our paths crossed.

We have been Yvonne’s neighbor for more than 30 years. She was an amazing person on and off the ice. She never stopped and lived life to its fullest, a true inspiration. She will be deeply missed by those who knew her. Thank you Apex for dedicating this session to Yvonne and letting us remember her in a very special way.
