Congratulations to the Jeffco Aquatic Masters (J.A.M.) Swim Team, who attended the recent Colorado Masters Swimming Association Short Course Championships meet at the University of Denver’s El Pomar Natatorium March 25-27.
Fifteen members of the J.A.M. team participated in the event, and the team took 6th place out of 36 teams. Three people took top place for their age groups: Aimee Quaratino, Steve McDanal and Michael Cox.
Other J.A.M. members who attended the meet were David Grazier, Rob Goodwin, Rich Jones, Marie Marschner, Barb McEahern, Anne Metzger, Bill Ott, C.C. Plummer, Robyn Popish, Dag Seymour, Audrey Shuss, Shelly Tame and coach Lani Meyer.
The team currently has more than 50 members, the largest roster in quite a few years. At least one-third of them are frequent participants, coming to Meyers Pool for coached workouts several times a week.
The masters swim program has only one requirement: you must be over 18. Swimming’s benefits as a fitness activity are hard to top, no matter what the swimmer’s age. It’s easy on the joints, great for flexibility, and because the swimmer is working against the resistance of the water, it’s a formidable calorie-burner as well. “This activity has something for everyone, whether they’re 19 or in their 90s,” said coach Lani Meyer.
The power of a group workout and the coach’s guidance are big advantages as well. Swimmers at Meyers on a recent April morning cited the camaraderie, appeal to all abilities, convenience, and last but not least, the benefits of a high-intensity, zero-impact activity as the main reasons why they keep coming back.
Masters swimming is also completely self-paced. There’s no requirement to compete, and members can participate in a variety of ways ranging from lap swimming to international competition. However, many Masters swimmers are just interested in an enjoyable fitness routine.
