The indoor turf arena inside the 50-year-old Garrison Street facility is being relocated to a site about a mile away, east of the intersection of 56th Place and Oak Street.
This move is necessary because the building in which it’s currently housed is situated in a floodplain. The new field house will be about 20% larger than the existing facility and will feature two full size turf arenas. Since the activities offered at the Garrison Street Sports Center are so popular, the new building will open just as the old facility shuts down, making a smooth transition for participants. If all goes according to plan, the new arena could open by mid to late 2011.
Dance, gymnastics and cheerleading classes now headquartered at the Garrison Street Sports Center will move to 82nd Ave. and Simms St. As with the turf programs, those activities will go on as usual through the relocation. The 82nd and Simms facility will undergo some remodeling and improvements to be ready for the move of these vital programs by mid-2011.
