At 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, about 75 attendees gathered to mark a milestone in community collaboration: the groundbreaking ceremony for Fitzmorris Recreation Center, Independence St. and W. 62nd Pl. Before picking up their shovels, speakers from Apex Park and Recreation District, the City of Arvada and Jeffco Public Schools remarked on the dedication of the community, experience and imagination through the planning stages, and the great results of local government working together.

Lauri Dannemiller, Apex PRD Executive Director, offered these insights on the day of the event: “As we begin to see this project come out of the ground, we realize just how unique this three-way partnership truly is. Apex Park and Recreation District passing the bonds and managing the 6 projects, the City contributing over $3 million towards the facility and Jeffco Public Schools sharing the land to become an integral part of the Fitzmorris Elementary School campus, stands as a model of efficiency and cooperation in the region. Those who say government isn’t working haven’t been paying attention to this project. Local government is where it’s happening!”

This new neighborhood recreation center is the result of a long-term community collaboration effort involving many entities: the City of Arvada, Apex PRD, the surrounding community, and those who voted for the 2016 bond issue to approve funding for the center. The 8,500+ sq. ft. recreation center will house a small weight room and community/aerobics area, with a six-lane outdoor pool adjacent. The estimated completion date is second quarter 2018.
