The annual Bike Rodeo at Secrest Youth and Teen Center took place from 10 am to noon on Saturday, April 28 at 6820 W. 66th Ave. Young cyclists and their families showed up for this annual free event that highlights safe fun for bike riders. About 120 youth participants attended with the families, and at the event they received free helmets (properly fitted by volunteers), provided by Exempla Lutheran Medical Center.

Other activities included the brain drop, a demonstration showing how “brains” made from gelatin, food coloring and other ingredients, might respond to impact with and without a helmet. The Citizens Police Academy Arvada Alumni put on some great obstacle courses and competitions, while other staff and volunteers did bicycle safety checks and showed riders proper hand signals and other elements of safe riding. Students from Maestas Taekwon-Do, which holds classes at Secrest, put on several demonstrations throughout the event.

Many thanks to the event sponsors: Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, NextCare, the Arvada Police Department, the Citizens Police Academy Arvada Alumni, The Goddard School, Hi Country Wire & Telephone, and Saunders Construction – and to all the volunteers who helped make the event run smoothly and successfully.
