Annual 60+ Spelling Bee Drew Dozens of Skilled Spellers

The 60+ Spelling Bee, a popular and eagerly-anticipated showcase for accomplished spellers, drew a big crowd again this year. The event took place Thursday afternoon, March 13 at the Apex Community Recreation Center, 6842 Wadsworth Blvd., Arvada.

The competition was fierce as always, and onlookers watched and listened intently as the group was whittled down to three. The first-place winner was Edward Geisler, the second-place winner was Mel Friedman and the third-place winner was Mary Welborn. The winning word was “acceleration.”

Thanks to all participants, spectators and last but not least, the generous event sponsors: the Arvada Press/Mile High News, Prime Time for Seniors Newspaper and Arvada Sterling House.

It is awesome to know that there is an annual spelling bee in my community! I would love to be a participant, but I will be an enthusiastic audience member until I reach the 60+ mark! Any chance say a 48 y.o. could compete’ Just checking!
