Pickleball Tournament Fund-Raiser Nets $3,400 for Proposed Park
The Apex Center hosted the Winter Blast Pickleball Mixer Tournament on February 28, 2014. A total of 48 players (24 doubles teams) competed for gold, silver and bronze medals. Winners were Roger Weiss and Chris Beal, gold; Vic Dent and PJ Ricker, silver; and Terry Stoehr and Jan White, bronze.
Many thanks to the event sponsors: Burrito Shack, Chick Fil-A, Domino’s Pizza, Einstein Bagels, Fuzzy’s Tacos, Jimmy John’s, Little Caesar’s, Randi’s Pizza and Subway. Another big thanks goes to those who helped out at the event, including Steve Cole, Joe Egloff, Chris Beal, Ray and Jackie Gilligan, Mariann Alonzi, Dianne Cry, Pat Bethel, Sarah Cunningham, Ken and Sharon Marquardt, and Stephanie Allen. Last but not least, thanks to the players and dozens of enthusiastic spectators!
The event proceeds of $3,400 will be donated to the proposed Community Heroes Park. The park is planned for the area around the Apex Simms Street Center and the new outdoor pickleball courts. With plans contingent on funding, the park would be a major addition to the area’s community recreation offering, featuring trails, native drought-tolerant plants, and educational elements showcasing our unique high-plains environment.
Meanwhile, the pickleball-playing community is eagerly awaiting the completion of eight more outdoor courts next to the Apex Simms Street Center. The first eight courts opened in November 2013 to instant popularity. Construction on the courts begins in April with a completion date tentatively scheduled for summer.
