Back in elementary school, everybody knew somebody that could spell really, really well. Some say good spellers are born that way, but apparently it’s also a gift you don’t grow out of! The proof was at Apex PRD’s Community Recreation Center, 6842 Wadsworth Boulevard, Arvada, CO, on Thursday, September 19. Fourteen spelling whizzes, ages 60 and over, showed their skill and confidence at the annual 60+ Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Arvada Press/Colorado Community Media, Celebrate Aging Colorado, Brookdale Senior Living Solutions, Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, School House Kitchen and Libations, and Homewatch CareGivers. The spellers came from four different cities and ranged in age from 61 to 85, with three spellers in their 80s. They navigated through 111 words and 18 rounds before the top three emerged: Nancy Bielak, first place, Suzanne Drexler, second place, and Cheryl Busch, third place. To take top honors, Nancy correctly spelled the word “boutonniere.” The rules call for one more correctly spelled word following the winning round, which was “connoisseur.”

Congratulations to all the spellers, and thanks to the sponsors for helping to bring this fun event to spelling connoisseurs and all those who admire them!
