Apex PRD instructor earns national award

Margaret Agnew

On June 19, the Apex Community Recreation Center, 6842 Wadsworth Boulevard, Arvada CO, hosted a luncheon for Margaret Agnew, Apex PRD fitness instructor and winner of the SilverSneakers National Instructor of the Year Award.

SilverSneakers is the nation’s leading community fitness program, serving more than 15 million older adults at more than 14,000 facilities throughout the nation through Tivity Health. Margaret was selected from more than 600 instructors nominated from across the nation for the Instructor of the Year award.

With more than 34 years of experience as an instructor, Margaret teaches nine different SilverSneakers classes at Apex Community Recreation Center and several others at the Apex Center.

As a SilverSneakers member herself, Margaret understands the needs and motivations of her class members. Although she teaches a wide range of class sizes, she connects with each student as an individual. As she stated at the luncheon, “Thank you for being here; you are all my friends and we support each other’s health and well-being.”

More than 500 students benefit each week from her knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. Jeff Glenn, President of the Apex PRD Board of Directors, expressed gratitude for that tremendous gift. “The district is truly blessed by your presence,” he said.

Apex PRD has more than 10,000 SilverSneakers participants at multiple facilities throughout the district. The program is free to participants whose Medicare supplemental health insurance includes SilverSneakers. The district has a huge variety of programs that focus on proactive, long-term health and wellbeing. Perhaps more importantly, the program fosters social connections that play a vital role in wellness for older adults, said Paul Wimer, Chief Experience Officer at Tivity Health, who emceed the awards luncheon.

After the luncheon, Margaret’s students packed the stage for a group photo (Margaret is in the front row, eighth from right in the black and white striped blouse). It’s a great illustration of Margaret’s magical connection with her students. Congratulations to this remarkable instructor who touches hundreds of lives! This well-deserved award is not only timely, but is particularly auspicious because Margaret works very hard to keep on top of Silver Sneaker incoming information and transmits it in such a simple way that all can understand and use. She wants to help each one of us to age better, fight frailty in seniors, and support our growth so we can not only exercise smartly but improve our balance and strength. Attagirl, Margaret! Looking forward to your classes each and every time!
