BOARD OF DIRECTORS
June 7, 2018

CALL TO ORDER

President Glenn called to order the June 7, 2018 meeting of the Board of Directors of Apex Park and Recreation District, held at 6:30 p.m. at the Apex Center, 13150 West 72nd Avenue, Arvada, Colorado. Board members in attendance were: Jeff Glenn, Ken Harrell, Stephanie Allen, and Liz Tomsula. Director Pyne was absent, absence excused. District staff members present were: Lauri Dannemiller – Executive Director; Nancy Wellnitz and Lynn Weiss – Community Recreation Center (“CRC”); Justin Maillet – Interim Recreation Services Director; Gordon Harrison – Apex Center; Gabe Hale and Al Aborishade – Technology Services; Carrie Gomer – Recreation Services Director; Jordan Crowe – Simms Street Center; Hillary Roemersberger – Recreation Services Director; Jaclynn Nelson – Fitness Coordinator; Cody Rule and Melinda Roy – Fitzmorris and Secrest Recreation Centers, respectively; and Dawn Fredette – Executive Assistant and Recording Secretary. Also in attendance was Margaret Agnew – Silver Sneakers Instructor at the CRC.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA AND ADDITION OF AGENDA ITEMS

Director Harrell moved for approval of the Agenda. Director Tomsula seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE MAY 17, 2018 BOARD MEETING

Director Harrell moved for approval of the Agenda. Director Allen seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

PUBLIC INPUT – None

NEW BUSINESS

1. National Silver Sneakers Instructor of the Year

Ms. Wellnitz spoke about Ms. Agnew, providing some background information and noting that Ms. Agnew was selected from 600 nominees. Ms. Wellnitz expressed that Ms. Agnew brings strength and compassion to her classes and to the CRC as a whole. She is constantly updating her classes based on the latest fitness information, and she even has a 100-year-old participant in one of her yoga classes.

Ms. Wellnitz also mentioned the event on June 19 at the CRC to award Ms. Agnew for her national Silver Sneakers recognition, which is a ticketed event.

Ms. Weiss spoke about Ms. Agnew, noting she is a wonderful employee who inspires everyone and whose classes are always full.

Ms. Agnew was introduced. She spoke about her fitness background, her great bosses at the CRC, and her delightful class members. The Board congratulated Ms. Agnew, noting they are very impressed and proud of her national recognition. The Board is looking forward to the event on June 19.

2. New Employee Introductions

Ms. Dannemiller explained that it’s important for new staff and Board members to become familiar with each other.

Gordon Harrison. Mr. Maillet noted he is standing in for Brian Bott, Ice Arena Manager, to introduce Gordon Harrison, the new skating director. Mr. Maillet provided some background information, noting that Mr. Harrison started in February and he’s already had a very positive impact in Ice.

Mr. Harrison was introduced and spoke about his background, explaining that he grew up in Canada and has skated all his life, including a few years with Disney on Ice. He further noted that the District’s Learn to Skate program is now at 600 members, up from 400. The Board thanked Mr. Harrison and welcomed him to Apex PRD.

Al Aborishade. Mr. Hale explained that Mr. Aborishade joined the District after the MaxGalaxy transition, noting Mr. Aborishade was the first-choice candidate when initially hiring for the MaxGalaxy position.

Mr. Aborishade was introduced and spoke about his background. He loves IT and is glad to be part of this vital department of the organization. The Board thanked Mr. Aborishade and welcomed him to Apex PRD.

Jordan Crowe. Ms. Gomer introduced Mr. Crowe, new Youth Sports Coordinator at Simms Street Rec Center. Mr. Crowe spoke about his love for sports and love for kids. He also spoke about his education in Marketing and how he transitioned from planning golf events to sports. He’s been with the District for two months and loves coming to work every day. The Board thanked Mr. Crowe and welcomed him to Apex PRD.

Jaclynn Nelson. Ms. Roemersberger introduced Ms. Nelson and provided some background information. She explained that Ms. Nelson was hired in March as the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator, and she’ll be overseeing programs at Fitzmorris and Secrest Rec Centers as well.

Ms. Nelson spoke about her education in Diet Science and her transition to Fitness. She’s very happy to be with the District. She also asked the Board members to share a little bit about themselves. Following their individual dialogs, the Board members thanked Ms. Nelson and welcomed her to Apex PRD.

Cody Rule. Ms. Roemersberger introduced Mr. Rule, new Facility Coordinator at the Fitzmorris Rec Center. Mr. Rule’s background includes working at the Apex Center as a Guest Services Assistant and at the Fitness Desk. He will be involved in the day to day operations at Fitzmorris and instrumental at the Grand Opening on June 23. He is currently pursuing a second degree in Recreation.

Mr. Rule spoke about his background and noted he grew up in the area. He also talked about a municipal recreation class he took in college, which intrigued him and led to his initial application for an open job with the District. The Board congratulated Mr. Rule on his current new position.

Melinda Roy. Ms. Roemersberger introduced Ms. Roy, new Facility Coordinator at the Secrest Rec Center. Ms. Roy was also an internal candidate, who had already been working at Secrest.

Ms. Roy spoke about her background, noting she was born and raised in Arvada and always played soccer. She’s excited for her new role. The Board expressed their appreciation for the local talent being hired by the District and that they are happy to have Ms. Roy at Secrest.

OLD/OTHER BUSINESS – None

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REPORT

Ms. Dannemiller talked about upcoming agenda items, including banking services, a financial update, and a Special Projects Team update.

Ms. Dannemiller and the Board also talked about the schedule for upcoming Board meetings. Following discussion, the Board determined to cancel the June 21 and July 5 meetings due to lack of agenda items and the 4th of July holiday. The next regular meeting will be on July 19.

Additional discussion included Board member attendance at upcoming events.
o June 18 – City Council recognition of Margaret Agnew: Director Harrell attending; no speaking required
o June 19 – Margaret Agnew award event at the CRC: Directors Glenn and Harrell attending; Director Glenn speaking
o June 23 – Fitzmorris Grand Opening: Directors Harrell and Allen; cannonball competition with the Mayor?

BOARD MEMBER REPORTS/INPUT

Director Tomsula noted the recent site tours of Fitzmorris and Secrest were helpful. Ms. Dannemiller indicated there would be tours of the District’s other sites scheduled as well.

Director Allen reported on the recent Foundation meeting. She shared with the other Board members the listing of funding requests that was provided by staff for consideration by the Foundation. Ms. Dannemiller explained the process for obtaining funding requests from staff.

Director Allen also provided updates on the Foundation’s upcoming Car Show and their Pickleball tournament held Memorial Day weekend. Additional discussion ensued regarding the Foundation’s current financial status and the passing of Foundation member Shirley Welch.

Director Harrell enjoyed the recent orientation held for the new Board Members, noting it was a great presentation. He also noted the breakfast meetings held the first Friday of the month at the American Legion are now on summer hiatus.

Director Glenn also thought the new Board member orientation was great. In addition, he’d like to see a site visit set up for the new Board members to tour the new Tennis Center.

Staff badges for Board members were also discussed.

MOTION: Director Harrell moved that the meeting be adjourned. Director Tomsula seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

President Glenn adjourned the meeting at 7:35 p.m.
