February 21, 2019

CALL TO ORDER

Vice President Pyne called to order the February 21, 2019 meeting of the Board of Directors of Apex Park and Recreation District, held at 6:30 pm at the Apex Center Randall Room, 13150 W. 72nd Avenue, Arvada, CO. Board members in attendance were: Stephanie Allen, Vicki Pyne, and Liz Tomsula. Directors Glenn and Harrell were absent. District staff members present were: Lauri Dannemiller – Executive Director; JoAnn Gould – Deputy Director of Recreation Services; Bob Roby – Deputy Director of District Services; Ben Sweet – Social Media Specialist; Nancy Wellnitz – Recreation Manager; Laura Schwenker – Recreation Coordinator; Lynn Weis – Recreation Coordinator; Jay Mauer – Operations Assistant; Jessica Starr – Operations Assistant Manager; Michele Stout – Fitness and Wellness Coordinator; and Rheana Rogers – Executive Assistant and Recording Secretary. Members of the public present were Abby McNeal, APAC.

MOTION: Director Allen moved to excuse Directors Glenn and Harrell from this evening’s meeting. Director Tomsula seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA AND ADDITION OF AGENDA ITEMS

MOTION: Director Tomsula moved for approval of the Agenda. Director Allen seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 7, 2019 BOARD MEETING

MOTION: Director Tomsula moved for approval of the Minutes. Director Allen seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

PUBLIC INPUT

Abby McNeal from APAC addressed the Board to share an invitation to the City of Arvada’s upcoming celebration of 100 Years of Parks in May. The City is planning a picnic in McIlvoy Park on May 11 from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. that will include many fun, family-friendly activities. A formal invitation will follow, but Ms. McNeal wanted the Board and Apex leadership to be able to save the date for the event. Director Pyne thanked Ms. McNeal for the invitation and expressed how pleased the District will be to participate in the festivities.

NEW BUSINESS

1. Seniors Who Shine Recognition – Nancy Wellnitz, Laura Schwenker, Lynn Weis

Ms. Wellnitz shared the honor the District has in acknowledging the contributions of our dedicated volunteers. She introduced Gerry Johansson who received the county-wide recognition of the Seniors’ Resource Center and Jefferson County Council on Aging for being the Apex Community Recreation Center’s longest-term volunteer, providing 5915 volunteer hours over 36 years of service. She is 94 years old and still volunteers. She along with the other nine volunteers honored this evening were presented with a certificate by the Board in appreciation of their service. The other volunteers were honored by the Arvada Sunrise Rotary and were Tim Sullivan, Gertrude Dathe, Linda Thompson, Kelly Lavrinc, Sara Wilson, Jean Williamson, Janine Mosness, Rod Card, and Janet Parker. Director Pyne stated that the BOD appreciates all the efforts of the volunteers and the valuable service they provide to citizens in our District.

2. SCFD Grant Resolution – Nancy Wellnitz

Ms. Dannemiller presented on behalf of the CRC the resolution to the Board. The SCFD grant helps fund the summer concert series, the cultural enhancement series, and Art for Young at Heart events. A motion of support is necessary for application for the grant.

MOTION: Director Allen moved for approval of APRD2019-06 Resolution of the Board of Directors of Apex Park and Recreation District Stating Their Complete Support for a Scientific and Cultural Facilities District Grant Request for the Humanities Enhancement Series. Director Tomsula seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

3. New Employee Introductions – Lauri Dannemiller

Ms. Dannemiller invited Ms. Gould to introduce three new full-time District employees: Michele Stout, Fitness and Wellness Coordinator; Jessica Starr, Operations Assistant Manager – Guest Services; and Jay Mauer, Operations Assistant – Apex Center.

OLD/OTHER BUSINESS

There was none.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REPORT

Ms. Dannemiller announced the departure of two District Services employees, Justin Howe who worked with the District for 17 years, and Nathan Eaton who worked for the District for 13 years. Administration is examining if realignment of these positions will occur, but regardless of that decision she anticipates these vacancies will be posted soon. Ms. Dannemiller acknowledged Mr. Howe’s and Mr. Eaton’s contributions to the District and the legacy they have left through the great work they have done.

BOARD MEMBER REPORTS/INPUT

President Glenn was absent.

Director Pyne attended the most recent Kiwanis meeting as well as the Pickleball Ken awards dinner last night. She recognized the amazing community of pickleball players and the fun event they put on.

Director Tomsula attended the recent Chamber meeting where the topic of discussion was health in the region, and the role of obesity in the cost of health care in our community. She invited Chamber members and the presenters to visit our Apex facilities to see our programming as it relates to health and wellness and obesity prevention.

Director Harrell was absent.

Director Allen had nothing to report.

ADJOURNMENT

MOTION: Director Tomsula moved that the meeting be adjourned. Director Allen seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

Vice President Pyne adjourned the meeting at 7:04 p.m.
