August 1, 2024 Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

Call To Order

President Pyne called to order August 1, 2024, meeting of the Apex Park and Recreation District Board of Directors, held at 6:31 pm at the Apex Center. Board members in attendance in person were Vicki Pyne, Rich Garrimone, Liz Tomsula, and Jo Burns. District employees in attendance were Monica Bowser – Marketing Administrator, Brook-Lyn Greenwood – Special Projects and Events Administrator and Recording Secretary, Jesse Badder-Director of Recreation Services, Riki Rarick – Manager of Emergency Services, Brian Bott – Apex Center Ice Arena Manager, Jordan Wood – Apex Intern and Megan Blood-Smyth – Apex Intern.

MOTION: Director Burns moved for approval of absence of Director McNeal. Director Tomsula seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

Approval of Agenda

MOTION: Director Tomsula moved for approval of the agenda. Director Burns seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

Approval of Minutes of The June 20, 2024, Board Meeting

MOTION: Director Garrimone moved for approval of minutes. Director Tomsula seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

Public Input

There was no public input.

New Business

  1. Apex Interns Presentation – Jordan Wood and Megan Blood-Smyth

Marketing and Special Event Interns introduced themselves and presented the board with their summer duties. Monica Bowser updated the board on the Jeffco Workforce interns.

  1. Ice Update – Jesse Badder
    • Learn to Skate in 2023 was the 2nd largest program in the state, with 1,183 participants.
    • The adult hockey league had 38 teams.
    • Our ice department has lots of external user groups and partners
    • A great partnership we have is with the Dawg Nation Hockey Foundation. They help people through times of crisis/tough times and have provided over $5 million in financial aid to families in need. Through this foundation, we provide 1 hour a week of ice for the “Hockey Heals Program.”

Executive Director Report

Administrator Bowser gave an update:

  • The pool is repaired and will be up and running tomorrow (August 2) at 10:30 am.
  • Park and Recreation Month was a huge success.
  • CRC Shutdown is August 4-9
  • Apex Center Shutdown is August 17-25
  • Pitch, Play and Stay – Apex Family Campout will be on August 10-11 at Majestic View Nature Center.

Board Member Reports

President Pyne:

  • Compliments to Indian Tree for their new bathroom.
  • The Serenity Ridge Park dedication was a fun day.

Director Burns:

  • Tossin’ for Tots Cornhole will be on August 24.
  • Kiwanis has been popular at 2nd Saturdays, selling beer and raising funds.
  • Serenity Ridge Park dedication was hot but awesome. She was involved in APAC from 2016-2019 and is excited to see the park done.
  • She will be volunteering at the Apex Foundation Golf Tournament on August 16.

Director Garrimone:

  • Director Garrimone attended the foundation meeting this morning and they spoke about their upcoming golf tournament. They currently have 92 players but will take 112, so they have 5 foursomes left to fill.
  • Once the foundation golf tournament is over, they will be getting ready for their Trick or Trot 5k.
  • There is an upcoming cart barn meeting, and hopefully, we will be getting a firm start date.

Director Tomsula:

  • Nothing to report.

MOTION: Director Pyne moved that the meeting be adjourned. Director Burns seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

President Pyne adjourned the meeting at 7:01 pm.
