Coffee talks spotlight interesting history

The Community Recreation Center, 6842 Wadsworth Boulevard, hosts Coffee Talks, a thought-provoking series on interesting topics. Here’s the upcoming schedule for winter and early spring:
History of Iran, part 1 – January 23: A geographic and historical perspective of Iran through some of its most pivotal events from prehistory to 1978. Topics include origins of Persian people, the first Persian Empire, the invasion of Persian Empire by Alexander the Great, Zoroastrianism as Iran’s first religion, the Arab invasion of Persia, the rise of Pahlavi Dynasty and efforts of the Shah to modernize Iran.
History of Iran, part 2 – January 30: Iran’s history from 1978 to the present. Topics: Iranian Revolution, hostage crisis, Iran-Iraq War, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Iraq and Syria wars and Iranian involvement, rivalry with Saudi Arabia, sanctions, the nuclear deal with the United Nations, and other topics as time permits.
Meet Maria Josefa Carson – March 27: Join Dr. Evangeline Sena for her portrayal as Maria Josefa Jarmillo Carson, the third wife of Kit Carson, the famous guide, hunter and military general. This living history presentation will give a unique perspective of what it was like to be a woman living in the mid 1800s.
All three Coffee Talks meet from 1:00 to 2:15 pm and the fee is $5.
