February 15, 2024

Call to Order

President Pyne called to order February 15, 2024, meeting of the Apex Park and Recreation District Board of Directors, held at 6:30 pm at the Apex Center Randall Room. Board members in attendance in person were Vicki Pyne, Rich Garrimone, Liz Tomsula, Jo Burns, and Abby McNeal. District employees in attendance were Jeff Glenn-Executive Director, Katie Groke – Director of Community Services and Recording Secretary, Riki Rarick – Emergency Services Manager, Bob Gomez – Apex Center Hospitality, Darren Bjorlin – District Services Manager, Michelle Stout – Recreation Manager, Mark Baird – Director of District Services, Nate Rothman – Interim Recreation Specialist, Dana Bammerlin – Recreation Manager, Monica Bowser – Marketing Administrator, and Laura Schwenker – Recreation Coordinator.

Approval of Agenda

Motion: Director Tomsula moved for approval of the amended agenda. Director Garrimone seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

Approval of Minutes of the January 18, 2023, Board Meeting

Motion: Director Burns moved for approval of the minutes. Director McNeal seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

Public Input

There was none.

New Business

  • New Employee Introductions – Jeff Glenn
    • Bob Gomez – Apex Hospitality, Gregg LePlatt introduced Mr. Gomez as the new Apex Center Hospitality. Nate Rothman was introduced as the interim Recreation Specialist by Dana Bammerlin.
  • SCFD Grant Approval – Laura Schwenker
    • Schwenker reported on the SCFD grant and the activities funded in part by the grant.
  • Motion: Director Tomsula moved for approval of Resolution APRD2024-04 – Resolution of the Board of Directors of Apex Park and Recreation District Stating Their Complete Support For a Scientific and Cultural Facilities District Grant Request for the Humanities Enhancement Series.
  • Walking Club Report – Laura Schwenker
    • Schwenker gave the BOD a report on the new Social Walking Club being held at the Apex Center indoor track.

Old/Other Business

There was none.

Executive Director Report

Mr. Glenn reported on the big week GEMS had last week with the Murder Mystery event, No Place Like Home Expo, Family Valentine’s Dance, and Art for the Young at Heart.

Mr. Glenn let the BOD know that we are now promoting a 2 for 1 deal for the Apex Center pool on Tuesdays. And on February 29 we are offering 29% off all punch cards, a one-day sale.

Mr. Glenn reported that Apex did receive the Jefferson County Open Space Trails grant for a new trail at the Apex Center that will connect 72nd Ave to the Ralston Creek Trail.

Mr. Glenn reported that President’s Day weekend will be very busy at the Apex Center with a large hockey tournament and expanded pool hours due to the non-contact days for Jeffco Public Schools.

Mr. Glenn reported on the SDA and CPRA meeting around property tax issues for 2024.

Mr. Glenn reported on a meeting with Jefferson County Open Space and the great relationship between the two organizations.

Board Member Reports/Input

Director McNeal:

Director McNeal complimented Apex on upgrading part-time staff to full-time positions. Kudos to marketing for the podcast and continued success of Apex Activated. Director McNeal supported Apex staff on snow removal and being ready for this weekend at the Apex Center.

Director Garrimone:

Director Garrimone reported the Apex Foundation is preparing for the pickleball tournament coming up in May. Director Garrimone updated the BOD on the progress of the Indian Tree cart barn project.

President Pyne:

President Pyne alerted the BOD about the Jefferson County open houses for their strategic plan.

Director Tomsula:

Director Tomsula attended the Chamber Annual Dinner and thought it was lovely.

Director Burns:

Director Burns commended CRC on the No Place Like Home Expo and thought the event was great.

Motion: Director Garrimone moved that the meeting be adjourned. Director McNeal seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

President Pyne adjourned the meeting at 7:22 pm.
