March 6, 2025 Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

Call To Order

President Pyne called to order the March 6, 2025, meeting of the Apex Park and Recreation District Board of Directors, held at 6:30 pm at the Apex Center. The board members in attendance in person were Vicki Pyne, Rich Garrimone, Liz Tomsula, Jo Burns. District employees in attendance were Riki Rarick-Safety and Emergency Manager; Monica Bowser-Community Services Manager-Recording Secretary; Mark Baird-Director of District Services, Michelle Stout-Recreation Manager Active Adults, Laura Schwenker-Recreation Coordinator Active Adults

APPROVAL OF THE EXCUSED ABSENCE OF DIRECTOR Abby Mcneal

MOTION: Director Burns moved to approve the minutes. Director Tomsula seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

Approval of Agenda

Approval of Minutes of The February 6, 2025, Board Meeting

MOTION: Director Tomsula moved to approve the minutes. Director Burns seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

Public Input

Tom Carney spoke about pickleball and is now the spokesperson for the original group of players. This group is unhappy with several items both at our outdoor courts as well as how we operate indoor drop in and skills & Drills.

New Business

  1. New Employee Introductions – Jeff Glenn
    1. Douglas Davey-Recreation Coordinator-Active Adults
    2. Tearzah Carlton-Administrative Coordinator-was not able to attend. The board was informed and approved.

2. SCFD Grant presentation and resolution – Laura Schwenker

Grant is due next week and we use it to fund the concerts at the park. Also use to fund art shows.

MOTION: Director Tomsula motioned to pass APRD2025-04 Resolution of the Board of Directors of Apex Park and Recreation District Stating Their Complete Support For a Scientific and Cultural Facilities District Grant Request for the Humanities Enhancement Series, Director Garrimone seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

3. Event Management School presentation – Laura Schwenker

Laura reported out on Event Management School that she attended earlier this year that takes place in Oglebay Resort.

Old/Other Business

Jeff Glenn reported archery range will be breaking ground and materials will be dropped off soon.

Executive Director Report

  • 7 candidates for 3 spots will be running for the election on May 6.
  • Thank you to board members who attended the chamber event.
  • YAB with 8 youth starting off. They are guiding us and telling us what they need.
  • Touch-A-Truck this Saturday with sensory hour.
  • Applied for a Jeffco workforce grant again. We are going for 6 total high school interns this summer.
  • Interviewing software companies and two of the companies came out this week. Rec Tech asked for a tour. Leadership will decide by the end of the month about what we are going to do.
  • Contracted with Pros for a feasibility study. Katie is working on details with Mike and will be getting that going.
  • BOD packet upcoming events, letter from Eide Bailey, picture of the cart barn and article about the 25 best towns to live in, in Colorado and Arvada is number one and the top three things are old town number one and Apex center is number three.

Board Member Reports

DIRECTOR BURNS:

Fun to see the roof on the cart barn and not in the parking lot. Shout out to CRC crew to rent the billiards room for Jo’s husband’s birthday in February. Indian Tree restaurant is getting spruced up with new paint, new tables, etc. Attorney General was at Kiwanis talking about funding, etc. and one was related to rise above Colorado and how social media is hurting our youth. On legislative updates with SDA and things we need to be aware of as they redistribute lottery funds taking from park and rec and giving to schools, Katie is all over that but be aware. Shared with Katie another house bill is changing the mandatory reporting for licensed childcare facilities. Chili bunco is coming up on Saturday with Kiwanis. March 15 old town festival celebration for St. Patrick’s Day.

DIRECTOR GARRIMONE:

The Foundation meeting this morning talked a lot about sponsorships for the year and for each event. Rich contacted Saunders and J&S. getting ready for the pickleball tourney on Memorial Day. Went to construction meeting at golf course. Details being worked out. At the end of April or middle of May we will get our cert of occupancy. New carts should be arriving at the same time. We are moving to an all-electric fleet. Two new members on the foundation.

DIRECTOR TOMSULA:

Attended quarterly coordinating committee meeting with the city. And huge shout out to jeff who has created a positive relationship with the city and everyone else who helps with that. City was very happy we had Hillary at the Lake Arbor community meeting

PRESIDENT PYNE:

President Pyne received a phone call from a mom regarding the locker rooms at Apex Center. Director Glenn will follow up.

MOTION: Director Garrimone moved that the meeting be adjourned. Director Burns seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

President Pyne adjourned the meeting at 7:26pm.
