
Outdoor Recreation
Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or just getting started, Apex Park and Recreation District's Outdoor Recreation programs offer something for everyone, from guided hikes and snowshoe outings on Colorado's Front Range to day trips, archery, geocaching and beyond. Programs are designed for all skill levels so participants can find the right fit for their fitness and experience. Get outside, explore your community and make lasting memories.
Search and Register for Day Trips
If you are looking to explore and attend fun events around Colorado, consider joining us on one of the many day trips offered through the Community Recreation Center. We enjoy offering diverse trip destinations and activities, so there is an option for everyone. Transportation is included, but spots may be limited.
Levels of Exertion (LOE) for Trips
- Level 1: Lunch out, sitting in a theater, or walking up to two blocks.
- Level 2: Walking through a museum or tour, walking more than two blocks, or climbing some stairs.
- Level 3: High altitude, walking more than four blocks or many stairs.
Search and Register for Hikes and Snowshoe Trips
Join us on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month for a hiking or snowshoe adventure. We explore popular trails on the Front Range in state and local parks. Come prepared by bringing the Hiking and Snowshoe Supplies for a fun, safe day of hiking.
Levels of Exertion (LOE) for Hike and Snowshoe Trips
- Level 1: Rated easy, 2-3 miles round trip with less than 400’ elevation gain.
- Level 2: Rated easy-moderate, 4-6 miles round trip with 400-1000’ elevation gain.
- Level 3: Rated moderate-difficult, over 6 miles round trip or over 1000’ elevation gain or high altitude.
The Apex Center archery range is a 60-yard outdoor range that accommodates both experienced and beginner archers. We offer classes by registration and drop-in times.

Indoor archery classes are available January-March in the Apex Center auxiliary gym.

Try Archery
This one-hour class is the perfect place to start if you are interested in archery. This class introduces you to the sport of archery, basic form, equipment, and range safety. It is a one-time introductory class, but you can still sign up if you have had archery experience. And you are also welcome to take it multiple times. Sign up with friends and family, or on your own. Equipment is provided.
Explore Archery
The Explore Archery class is designed for students who want to explore the sport of archery. In this class, students will learn the basics of shooting technique, with an emphasis on safety when shooting a bow and proper archery range etiquette. The coaching staff is dedicated to creating a fun and interactive learning experience that fosters a lifelong passion for the sport. Equipment is provided. Three sessions.
Explore Archery II
The Explore Archery II class is for students who have completed Explore Archery. This 4-week class will focus on improving shooting form through the steps of shooting and on expanding knowledge of range safety, including the use of whistle commands. The coaching staff will introduce various games to expand archers' skills and knowledge of archery and equipment. Through interactive learning, students will have an opportunity to earn achievement awards in range safety, equipment, shooting form, shot execution, and scoring. Equipment is provided. Prerequisite: Explore Archery or instructor approval required.
Junior Olympic Archery Development
Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) is a USA Archery initiative that introduces youth ages 8-20 to archery. Recreational and competitive archers are both welcome. Archers will learn range safety and proper shooting technique in a fun and positive environment. JOAD is designed to grow with the archer, fostering self-confidence and team building. JOAD also provides archers with the skills and foundation to compete at local, state and national competitions. JOAD is open to anyone interested in learning about archery, ages 10-20, or anyone ages 8-20 who has taken a class through the archery program.
Adult Archery Club
The Adult Archery Club is an opportunity to make new friends, have fun, and build your archery skills in a laid-back, welcoming environment with other adults. This weekly club is the perfect place to start, whether you shoot recreationally, competitively, or want to find out more about leagues and tournaments.
Archery Team Building
Step away from the desk and onto the archery range. Shoot some arrows to boost morale. Taught by USA Archery-certified instructors, participants will learn about range safety and archery basics. After an introductory lesson, colleagues will then work in teams to collaborate on archery challenges. Groups must communicate and strategize to outshoot the competition. Archery Summer Camps
Discover the sport of archery in summer camp. Participants will learn about archery equipment, range safety and rules, and shooting technique. Through games and activities, students will practice skills that challenge them individually and as part of a team. The camp is an excellent place to start your archery journey and lay a foundation for continued growth in the sport. Camp is taught by USA Archery-certified instructors.
Private or Semi-Private Archery Coaching
Private lessons focus on the individual archer’s personal goals. These lessons are invaluable when working on form changes or other specific issues. Lessons can focus on form, goal development, training plan development, bow and equipment tuning or any other area an archer wants to work on. Equipment is provided, or archers may bring their own equipment.
$75 per hour with a certified instructor, plus an additional $10 per person for groups of up to 4 people.

Backyard Games
Enjoy a laid-back outdoor experience with the 3-week Backyard Games program. This fun and social activity brings together classic games, including washers, cornhole (bags) and bocce ball, for a great time outdoors. Whether you’re looking to learn something new or just enjoy some friendly competition, this program is perfect for all ages and skill levels. Participants will rotate through different games, learn how to play, and have the chance to play in a relaxed, welcoming environment. The final week will consist of a friendly tournament among participants to showcase the skills you have learned.
Go Geocaching
Join us to learn about the world’s biggest treasure hunting game. There are over 3 million hidden containers called geocaches worldwide. Individuals in the geocaching community create geocaches. They come in all shapes and sizes. By downloading an app, you can navigate to the geocaches you choose. The app will get you to within 30 feet of the geocaches. Then you look for clues. The instructor will take you on a step-by-step geocaching adventure.
